Chris Witcombe has a well written article on the beginning of square dancing roots as it relates to "Morris Dancing" in Great Britain. Does square dancing come from the Celts, Welts, Moorish Africans, Spanish Moors, or the "morisco" from courts of Italy? Read Witcombe's article at Brtiannia.com and decide for yourself. eaasdc.de

A collection of summary essays from Dorothy Shaw, Bob Osgood, and Kenny Reese on the origins of square dancing can be found at www.eaasdc.de/history/sheindex.htm. Extremely good reading, especially if you like the historical music and a feel for what the times were like!

A Brief History of Square and Round Dancing

Marlan Sorenson of North Dakota has an essay at geocities.com that is written in present tense of the history of round and square dancing. She pays more attention to the American history of square dancing than our European ancestors. Good reading about the development of square dancing in America.
